Do you Ever Wonder What a Makeup Artist Does?

A Makeup Artist?......What is that?

So, what do you do? I am sure that is a question you get asked all the time. I know I get asked that quite often. It is a great way for someone to find out a little bit about you when you first meet.

Well....what do I do....I am a stylist and a makeup artist.

Since I am a freelancer, that means I do not work in a salon or at a makeup counter. I am in a different place every day, working with different kinds of people.

Yes, I do weddings almost every weekend. I also work with a local modeling agency as a stylist on their shoots and I also teach the styling class to their new talent. The style class is the run down on what to do and how to be prepared if a stylist isn't there to do it for them. I work in print and video commercial production. If your want to learn to do your hair and makeup for a special occasion or for an update to your everyday look, call me for a DIY lesson.

Its funny because people find this very fascinating and sometimes a little hard to understand. In Allure magazine awhile back, they had some quick facts of my industry. They say, "a makeup artist sounds like a modern occupation but cosmetic pros have been around for thousands of years". Here are some quick facts, I found interesting.

3000 BC
Approximate date that a woman used a makeup artist to help with body painting was recorded on a cave wall painting.

A.D. 100
A wealthy Roman woman used an ornatrix, or a beauty servant to style her hair and stain her lips.

1946
Makeup artists created false eyelash strips from hair clippings.

1937
Debutantes had makeup lessons from artists before the King's coronation. See, Kate Middleton's DIY wasn't the first royal lesson for a special event.

70 Million
Number of viewers who watched the Nixon/Kennedy debate in 1960. Nixon refused a makeup artist and the public felt he had lost because he looked drawn.

30 to 50
The number of makeup bags MUA Pat McGrath brings to each job. Well, this makes me look like I pack light!

$22,800
Makeup artist, Amy Strozzi's earnings for 2 weeks of work with Sarah Palin in 2008. Strozzi was the highest paid staffer on John McCain's campaign.

$378
The average amount an American bride spends for her bridal hair and makeup.

Thanks Korie Lynn for the photo featured above of me in action, applying false lashes actually. I hope you enjoyed these fun facts.
