When I was at home in Louisiana for Christmas with my family, my cousin (also a hairdresser) was telling me that she had discovered the greatest DIY hair mask. This is always an interesting topic to me, so I slid my chair over and demanded she tell me more.
"Well", she said, "Your daddy, gave *mama some of that coconut oil that he has been raving about. And I have been using it in the shop as a hair mask and it is working wonders on dry, damaged hair."
*Side note, her mama is also a hairdresser. I was genetically predisposed to becoming what I am today. Now, additional side note, my father had made this discovery as a dietary supplement and is adding coconut oil into his diet, not his hair. This is what you can expect of us, we will turn any item into a beauty product. We Southern women are vain and not ashamed of it. Well, I will speak for myself.
So I went right out and found myself some coconut oil and let me tell you it is just amazing. Now, I think my cousin uses it in her shop and has her clients sit under the hood dryer. I do not have a hood dryer so I just slathered it all over my head, about 2 inches from the scalp down to the ends.
I piddled around the house all day in a shower cap, while doing chores. I kept it in for about 3 hours. About 30 minutes in, my husband asked, "um, how much longer are you going to keep that on your head." I told him that I was clearly the professional and he should trust my judgement. Poor guy.
In the meantime, I also made the most fabulous body scrub. I mixed 1/4 cup of the coconut oil, 1/4 cup of sugar and added 15 drops of grapefruit seed oil for scent. I picked this scent because I love citrus and the description of the essential oil said that it inspires joy. Sold!
I can not tell you enough how amazing this scrub is. You will be so silky smooth and smell like delicious. I would recommend a tasty cocktail with an umbrella in it for good measure.
Will you try this? Tell me what you think? No, seriously, it makes me so happy when you comment on this blog. I will probably do a little dance. Maybe I should video that. My dance moves are pretty fabulous.

ReplyDeleteHaha. Yes, that is what I told him! And you are totally famous, thanks for telling me about your secret! Everybody needs to come to you to get it done now.
DeleteThis makes me want to pull the coconut oil out of hiding. Thanks for the great post!
ReplyDeleteI actually put coconut oil in my hair and sleep in it overnight and wash it out the next morning. It makes my curls so soft and manageable. I love it! I need to try the oil in other ways because I have heard that it has amazing health benefits, too.
ReplyDeleteYay! Im so glad you liked it! I love how it feels on my skin and hair. My dad swears by adding a little to his oatmeal every morning. That was his original intention, to educate me on the health benefits but I just smeared it all over myself instead:)
